Elmo & Montegrappa S.p.A. is an Italian manufacturer of luxury goods that was founded in 1912. The company is currently based in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. Montegrappa is mainly known for their fountain pens, as reflected in their original slogan of “Manifattura pennini d’oro e penne stilografiche” (“Manufacturer of gold nibs and fountain pens”). High profile users and collectors of their writing instruments have included a wide range of celebrities and world leaders, as well as Formula One legends such as Michael Schumacher, Jean Todt, and Stirling Moss.
Montegrappa was acquired by the Richemont Group in 2000, which operated the brand from 2001 to 2005. Richemont also owns Vacheron Constantin, Roger Dubuis, Piaget, Panerai, Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC Schaffhausen, Cartier, and A. Lange & Söhne. The Aquila family acquired Montegrappa in 2009.
Jean Alesi
The Italian brand introduced their first watch in 2010 as part of the NeroUno collection, which also included a pen and cufflinks. Montegrappa worked with former Formula One driver Jean Alesi to produce the Jean Alesi Edition Chronograph (ref. IDJNWA00), which was announced in November of 2016. Designed in collaboration with Alesi, a shareholder and board member of the brand, the French driver’s signature appears on the dial underneath the Montegrappa logo. The exclusive timepiece had a limited run of 300 pieces.
Formula 1 Pens
As a company, Montegrappa has also produced pens dedicated to well known names in Formula One like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Ayrton Senna. In 2020, the Italian brand helped celebrate Formula One’s 70th anniversary with the F1® Seventy line of pens. True to the sport’s technology, the primary materials included titanium and carbon fiber. The following year, Montegrappa introduced the F1® Speed after the revealing of the next-generation 2022 F1 car.
