Scalfaro is based in Neuhausen, Germany and was founded in 2001 by brothers Alexander Kuhnle and Dominik Kuhnle. The company name comes from the Italian word for “lighthouse”, and their watches are primarily inspired by motorsport and yachting.
John Surtees
Scalfaro worked with John Surtees, the only person to have won Grand Prix world titles on both two and four wheels, to introduce the Scalfaro John Surtees Edition chronograph in 2014. Parts of the proceeds were donated to the Henry Surtees Foundation, named after his son who was killed in a Formula 2 race during the 2009 season. Genuine parts from Surtees’ championship-winning 1960 MV Agusta 500 4C and 1964 Ferrari 158 are integrated into the watch case. The sapphire crystal features the Henry Surtees Foundation logo and a reproduction of John Surtees’ signature, with the display case back showcasing his title-winning achievements by year. The unique timepiece was limited to 300 pieces.
Henry Surtees Foundation
Prior to the model launch, the ‘P1’ John Surtees Edition prototype that was worn by Surtees himself was auctioned off in 2014 through Bonhams on behalf of the Henry Surtees Foundation. Like the production models, the prototype also included parts from his title-winning machines.
